Guest Post:
Why Greek gods in modern times?
When I decided to try my hand at an actual book series, the first idea that popped into my mind was that it should be about Greek gods. That is where the idea for the Gods Behaving Badly series started. People since then have asked me why Greek gods? Why not? Not only are there plenty of gods to choose from, which means lots of potential characters for a book series, but they are fascinating to me. I believe that you should write what you know and love, so ancient gods from mythology just made me want to write them. Plus let’s face it, all those overgrown personalities make for some pretty good fiction! Talk about drama! For my own personal deities of lore stories I chose to place them in modern times with diminished powers. Same egos, but more challenges. So far I am liking the results. Looted, the first in the series was pretty well received and I am hoping Stealing Hearts does just as well. I am loving writing this series and in the latest book have already brought in more gods and that means more stories to tell. Here is a little sneak peak from Stealing Hearts.

Excerpt:
The next morning Bruce awoke feeling happier than he could ever recall feeling. Suddenly he snapped open his eyes to make sure that Sophia still lay beside him. Sure enough, she slept peacefully next to him, a slight smile played on her beautiful features, her long auburn hair mussed, making her even sexier. Thank god, or goddess in this case. He had been afraid she’d disappear despite her promise the night before. Now that his need for her had been abated ever so slightly, maybe he could get her to answer some questions that had been eating him alive since their first meeting. His stomach growled; he forgot when his last meal had been and he had certainly worked up an appetite the previous evening. Quietly, he slipped out of bed, praying that goddesses kept a fully stocked kitchen. Maybe a little breakfast in bed would make her more talkative about the magic she seemed to have awakened within him. He still needed to know what an empath truly was, what he truly was, and what he was capable of doing. It seemed too farfetched to believe he was anything but human. However, he certainly felt different when with Sophia.
Making it to the kitchen, he was thrilled to see Sophia had all the makings for a fine breakfast. He turned on the small television on the counter as he began to get the eggs and bacon ready to cook. Mostly, he just wanted a little noise as he got to work, but something suddenly caught his attention.
“This is the highest profile art heist to hit Los Angeles in history. What is even more puzzling, there is no evidence as to who could have stolen the painting. All cameras and security systems are working properly, and the guards on duty didn’t see or hear anything. No alarms sounded, and the Getty’s systems show that no one entered or exited the premises last night. Van Gogh’s Irises is valued at over fifty-five million dollars, but many consider it priceless. If you have any information please contact the police. This is certainly not how we wanted to start off the New Year…”
Bruce’s heart sank. As he lay asleep last night, exhausted by lovemaking, it appeared Sophia may have been up to her old tricks. How could he ever learn to truly trust a creature such as her? She seemed to be getting bolder too, now she wasn’t just stealing from nefarious rich men, but from the Getty Center, and a high profile piece as well. He must not have provided her with enough excitement last night after all.

New Vampire Release

Please welcome the awesome Sheri Velarde on my blog today. She’s here to tell us more about her latest release of vampire shorts and her inspiration behind the collection.

I think that all authors have weird ticks in their writing, things that they can’t even explain why they exist. For me one of mine is the fact that all of my vampires seem to be French. I have other tick as well, like werebears are Russian and werewolves seem to be American in my writings. But none are more prevalent for me than my French vampires.

Why French vampires? I don’t know if I can full answer that. I suppose part of it is that I lived in France for a while when I was younger and the French culture really stuck with me. Especially their attitudes about sex and sexuality. They are so open and fluid about sex over there. I guess part of me just figures those are the same attitudes that vampires would have. Why be prejudice or prude when you get to live forever? Also, the French accent is just dead sexy. I don’t care what you say, French is one of the sexiest languages out there!

I think I also make my vampire French because I always assume their origins are in Europe, from countries with rich and vast histories. Well France is the country I know the most about, the one I am most comfortable discussing, so it seems to be a natural fit for me. That was extremely important in my historical piece, Curse of the Blood. Plus I want to be different, I don’t want my vampires to be from Eastern Europe. I want a sexy French vampire to dazzle my heroines and heroes.

Guest Post: Sheri Velarde – The Lust, Sex and Tattoos Blog Hop

Hi Everyone,

Please welcome the super awesome, fabulous author of Lust, Sex and Tattoos on my blog. First let’s take a look at the sexy cover.

20160104-200355.jpg

Now let’s pick this lovely author’s brains a bit.

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
I started writing stories when I was a kid in grade school. I always wrote in some shape or form since then. It wasn’t until I was in my early 30s that I even thought of becoming published. It was a gentle nudge from a friend who gave me the courage to submit those first stories.
How long does it take you to write a book?
Well that depends on the books. Shorts and novellas only take a month, then some time for editing. Novels take me at least three months, sometimes more. Depends on the story and on the muse at the time. That’s why I always have more than on story going at once. If one is being stubborn I can work on another.
What is your work schedule like when you’re writing?
Now that I work at home I try to make my writing schedule fit my husband’s work schedule. That means I don’t start my work day until about 11:15 when he leaves for work. I start off by doing some art or jewelry (my side business) and then tackle emails, marketing, and the like until a late lunch. After lunch is when I truly begin writing. I would say I try to write from 2:30 in the afternoon until about 7:00 when I break to make some dinner. Then I get another hour and a half in before the husband gets home. Then it all starts again the next day. I rarely take a day off.
What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?
I can’t seem to write at a desk! I write in bed. I write at the kitchen table. I write on the couch. Never at a desk though. No idea why.
Where do you get your inspiration or ideas for your books?
Inspiration can come from anywhere. Take Lust, Sex and Tattoos for instance. It is patricianly based off my own experiences in tattoo shops (I have 16 and counting tattoos) and Karen was a mixture of friends. One whom I did go with to get her first tattoo and another who left and abusive relationship and found herself and her courage after that, though she did not get tattooed in the process or have a wild night with a tattoo artist… to my knowledge! lol

What do you like to do when you’re not writing?
I like to paint and make jewelry. I am in the process of learning to make hats and fascinators. I love to read and listen to music. My husband and I are avid players of board games. I love comics and all things nerdy.
What does your family think of your writing?
My husband is completely supportive. He is the one who convinced me to give writing a go full time. He is the best fan/reader/husband ever!
As a child, what did you want to do when you grew up?
When I was young I really wanted to be an archeologist. Then I found out I have an issue with the sun (I get sick and overheated easily) and that they did not all carry whips like Indiana Jones. A part of me is still disappointed.

Short Blurb:
Karen is a woman looking to make a new beginning after breaking away from an abusive past. Her first stop is a tattoo shop, to show herself that she is no longer afraid to live her life the way she sees fit and to mark her freedom with a permanent reminder to never go back. When she catches sight of her tattoo artist, Ben, well she suddenly has things other than ink on her mind. Ben is wild, free and uninhibited, everything that she wants to be and more. Soon she is left alone with the man that embodies her dreams and sparks begin to fly. It’s safe to say that she gets way more than she bargained for when she originally stepped into his shop, as Ben helps her unleash her wild child and truly begin her life again. One wild night can truly change a woman forever.
Short Excerpt:
With measured steps to try to hide her nerves, Karen followed him through the curtains and down a hall lined with tattooing rooms. She could hear the needles more clearly now and for a moment she thought of running from the shop just to escape that unnerving sound. Taking a deep breath, she continued on, knowing she could, and would do this, to prove something to herself if nothing else. Ben’s tattoo room was in the very back and away from the others who were working. She stepped in and he closed the door behind them. She was completely alone with the most alluring man she had ever met. She gulped. This was definitely going to be an interesting night.
Ben motioned for her to take a seat on the tattoo chair as he sat down on a rolling stool. “Hop on up and take your shirt off for me and lay on your side, facing me.”

Hi Everyone,

It’s been a while. Please welcome Sheri Velarde to my blog. She’s here to promote her brand new book…

Book released November 25th

The world of publishing is forever changing and it up to authors to try to keep up. This year has been a great year and a difficult one for me on the publishing front. On the bright side I had my first fantasy novel come out, had a book signing for it, entered new some genres and published several shorts with various publishers. On the downside I saw two of my smaller publishing houses close their doors for good. That saddened me more than I can tell you. That is also what led me to the decision to start self-publishing some of my work. I am still with some small presses and may have something with a large house next year (fingers crossed), but I also want to have some control over my publishing as well. My fiancé and I are forming our own publishing house called Stoker Publishing and Not So Silent Night is our first step towards that dream.
Not So Silent Night is a re-release with expanded scenes and has been completely re-edited. I am pretty proud of this story and think it is the perfect book to launch my self-publishing career on. It’s steamy, sweet and hopeful all at the same time. I am hoping that it is the first of many of my stories that I will be putting out there myself as I move into the new age of publishing, well at least new for me. Scared and excited at the same time. I hope you enjoy a taste of Not So Silent Night.

Here’s what the books about…

Another lonely Christmas approaches for Anna and her life of penance—until an otherworldly distraction appears and changes her life.

Anna is a lonely woman, running her dead grandmother’s flower shop. She hates Christmas and could not feel more lost when a handsome and mysterious Russian, Alexander, walks into her shop and her life. Each has secrets that they are harboring. Just as their passion erupts, the good old boys in town threaten to ruin everything. Getting to know each other is tough for most couples, adding in magic does not make it any easier. Now with a pack of werewolves out to destroy them, things become intense. They find themselves in a fight for their lives. Can their newfound love give them the strength to win against this threat and trust in the future?

Excerpt:
She had almost finished cleaning up in back when she heard the bell on the door ring less than five minutes before closing. “Seriously? Can’t people let me get out of here on time just one damn night?” she muttered to herself as she stormed toward the front so she could wait on her customer and then get the hell out of the store.

Anna whipped around the corner in a huff, not caring if she scared the latecomer away. She stopped in her tracks and almost forgot what had pissed her off when she saw the customer in question. The most breathtaking back view of a man she had ever seen stood just inside the doorway, and her brain stopped working for the moment. Wow, who knew broad shoulders and a great rear could stop a woman in her tracks? While she gawked like an idiot, the man turned around and proved to be even more distracting from the front. This guy was like a wall of muscle, perfect body attached to a very masculine and handsome face with the deepest blue eyes Anna had ever seen.

“Sorry, I know you are about to close, but I need a gift of flowers,” he said when he saw Anna. He had a very thick eastern European accent that she thought might be Russian, which of course only made him hotter. She noticed his eyes taking her in, and she couldn’t help but stand a little straighter, showing her curves off to her advantage while she absentmindedly ran her fingers through her long, wavy, raven hair, which most men seemed to love.

It took Anna’s brain a few moments to catch up before she could speak. Her previous anger and frustration vanished, replaced by eagerness to help this particular customer. “No problem at all. Do you have an idea of what kind of gift you are looking for? Is this for your girlfriend or wife?” Anna held her breath as she waited for this mystery man to answer, a bit annoyed with herself that she cared so much about what he might say.

Saturday Excerpt

Fine, I guess.”
“What do you mean you guess? Why don’t you call her up and ask her how she is?” Crew says.
“Maybe I will.” I glance at Connor. The conversation between him and the red head’s getting hectic. She’s laughing at something he said. I get up suddenly struck by a sudden need to embarrass Connor.
“Where are you going?” Hayden asks.
“Watch me.” I head over to the girl who managed to captivate Connor after his self-imposed thirteen months of celibacy.
“Hi,” I greet when the girl notices I’m standing behind Connor.
“Hi.” She smiles.
“I was wondering if I could move our tables together.”
Connor realizes it’s me when he hears my voice. He glances at me, mortified at my suggestion.
“Ty?” he says surprised before swearing me under his breath.
“Ty?” a second, softer voice repeats.
I turn towards Bree’s friend for the first time. “Lana?”
My world pauses when she smiles at me. I forget about embarrassing Connor.
“Hi.” She waves slightly. Her cheeks redden.
“Hi.” Why can’t I come up with anything to say whenever I’m around Lana?
Confusion clouds the redhead’s face. “You two know each other?”
Lana smiles shyly. “Yeah. Ty, meet my best friend, Bree. Bree, Ty.”
“Would you mind if I pulled our tables together?” I ask Lana since Connor still hasn’t replied to me.
“Not at all,” she replies. Her eyes sparkle.
Holy dessert on crap sticks. I barely know her but I’ve missed her. The guys help me pull the tables together without breaking or spilling anything. I pull my chair closer to Lana’s. Our hands touch briefly and once again shadowy images of Lana being pulled against her will from me flashes in my head. I can’t tell who’s pulling her away neither do I know the reason she’s being taken away. The only thing I’m sure off is that I’m the one she’s being yanked away from.
Connor and Bree carry on talking and don’t pay much attention to what’s going on around them. Hayden and Crew resume eating. Lana glances at me. My chest does a series of crazy flip flops. I’ve never been so badly affected by a girl before. I’m still speechless.
Her mouth is bow shaped. She isn’t wearing any lip color. My hormones shoot to my brain when she licks a tiny seed off her lips. I imagine crushing her lips against mine — and wonder how soft her lips are and how warm the inside of her mouth is. She glances at me in that instant. A warm heat creeps up my cheeks.
Thank God, Lana can’t read minds.
So what if she could? A tiny voice in my head questions, I know you want her to see what you’ve been doing to her in your dreams.
Dream, I correct myself, I only dreamt of her once.

Snippet from my Sexy Super Hero Biker Series

She shakes her head without making eye contact. “No.”
Something’s wrong. The girl sitting next to me has turned into the exact opposite of the chick I nearly made love to.
“Then?”
She shakes her head. “It’s been a long day. I really should get some rest.”
“Okay.” I adjust my seat and turn the key in the ignition.
“Do you regret it?” Her gentle voice catches me off guard.
I leave the gear in neutral and turn to face her. “Not one bit,” I tell her hoarsely.
She smiles. “I’m a little scared,” she admits eventually.
“Of me?”
She shakes her head. “No.”
“Then?” I prompt.
She looks away. “Sex,” she whispers.
“Which part?” I ask.
She shakes her head. “I’m not sure. Maybe all of it.”
I place my hand over hers. “It isn’t scary if it’s with someone you love.”
“I’m sorry,” she whispers.
“Why?”
“Ruining our moment.”
Her soft voice tugs at my heart. “You haven’t ruined anything at all.”
I caress her lips and wish I could kiss her again. My hand brushes hers when I shift the truck into gear and I’m haunted by another image of Lana being forcefully taken away from me. I move my hand away quickly. I need to get some sleep. I’m probably exhausted and hallucinating as a result. That must be it.
“I’d love to do this every night,” I tell her.
“Get drenched on the promenade?” she asks
“If it means snuggling up next to you afterwards — then hell yeah.”
She laughs. “You make me feel like the sexiest woman on earth.”
I’m glad she’s forgotten about her earlier apprehension. “You are the sexiest woman I’ve ever met.”
“That’s because you bring out the best in me.”
Slowly the part of me that Cora destroyed after betraying my family is sprouting back to life.
“And you’re the best thing that ever happened to me.”

Random Poem

This could be about one of my characters…

Do you see that girl with the big brown eyes,
The one with the radiant smile?
Do you notice her walk
Or would you rather hear her talk?
What is it about her that makes you stare?
What is it about her that makes you care?

Do you see that girl with the big brown eyes?
The one who’s tired of listening to lies?
Don’t you wonder why she no longer smiles?
Have you ever wondered who she really is?
And what it would be like to see her laugh?
Did you notice her tears
When she turned your way?
Maybe not, ‘cos she blinked them away.

Do you see the girl with the big, brown eyes?
The one you promised you’d never hurt?
Do you remember her voice?
Do you recall her hope?
You ended it all with one quick choice
And didn’t once think how she’d feel?
Do you see the girl with the big, brown eyes,
The one who forces a smile
While deep down she wonders why.

#YA Excerpt

I’m working on a YA r&r. Here’s a snippet.

“Hey.”
I jump even though I recognize his voice. Somebody’s answered my silent prayer and turned on the lights. He’s standing on the window ledge, shirtless. A gentle breeze ruffles his hair. He’s beautiful and muscled. My heart skips a beat when he smiles.
“Hey,” I whisper afraid the girls or Dad will hear me.
He waves. “How are you feeling?”
I’m grinning so hard it’s hard to answer him. “Great.”
“Come on down,” he says.
I shake my head. Dad’s still up and his study’s downstairs. He’ll definitely notice if I leave the house. Dad is pretty strict with us regarding to boys and stuff. That’s why I’m amazed my sisters have been brave enough to start kissing.
“Skye?” Claude’s voice pulls me out of my thoughts.
“You coming or not?”
I shake my head.
He shakes his head and disappears inside his house. I’m on a high as I prepare to shut the sliding door and call it a night. Claude actually spoke to me. Every cell in my body sings in ecstasy.
“Early bird?”
I jump at the sound of his voice behind me. “H…how…” My voice trails off.
“…did I get up here?” He leans against the balcony railing, still shirtless. “I have skills.” He grins.
It’s hard to keep my eyes of his wide shoulders, broad chest and abs. “Okay.” I don’t know what else to say. My face heats up because of his closeness and naked muscled torso.
He holds out a bunch of red roses. “Hope you’re feeling better.”
“I am and thanks.” The scent of the roses are unlike I’ve ever smelt before. “They’re beautiful.”
“Grown especially for you.” He grins revealing sparkling, white teeth.
My insides melt when he grins. Shit. I had no idea he’d affect me like this once I finally saw him and spoke to him.
“Thanks.”
“You should put them in some water before they die,” he says.
“Yeah.” There’s a vase with fresh water on my outside table with two yellow roses – from Nina and Dawn. I pop the fresh bunch of roses inside the vase and wonder what to say next. He’s still leaning against the balcony railing the minute I turn around.
“Don’t you think it’s ironic?”
“What?”
He straightens himself and I realize he’s much taller than I imagined. “That I turned out to be such an amazing singer after all and you got your eyesight back.”
My heart beats harder. “Yes, you are an extraordinary singer…”
He laughs again. “I’m kidding. Are you always this serious?”
I shrug. “I guess…”
“So have you written any songs since you got your eyesight back?”
“Dozens. Would you like to hear one?”
His smile vanishes. “We had a deal, remember?”

Excerpt from FIGHT FOR ME – prequel to Rescue Me #NA #amwriting

CHAPTER ONE
Leaking gasoline. Check.
Faulty brakes. Check.
I take a deep breath, check my reflection in the rear view mirror and count to ten. My nerves are on edge and my pulse races.
You’re doing the right thing, Cora, I tell myself even though every cell in my body argues otherwise. This is the right thing to do. It is for a good cause. Then why all the reassuring? I question my reflection. If everything was right about this project, why are you so nervous?
I’m not nervous, I’m just scared something will go wrong.
What can possibly go wrong? I wonder. I’ve rehearsed this scene over and over in my head. The simulation went perfectly. All I have to do is crash the car and wait for him to rescue me.
The FEELERS told me he can sniff danger a mile away. Everyone I’ve met at the organization I recently joined raves about him. They’re eager to bring him onto our team – they have a vision of a crime free world and they’re starting by cleaning up one town at a time. It’s about time we lived in a Utopia. I’ve always wanted to be a crime fighter – without having to become a cop. Bad guys needs their asses kicked because the law doesn’t always work in the victim’s favor. I’ve seen more crooked cops in my life than justice. Is that a reason enough to trick Caleb Daniels? my conscience questions.
