Why Greek gods in modern times?
When I decided to try my hand at an actual book series, the first idea that popped into my mind was that it should be about Greek gods. That is where the idea for the Gods Behaving Badly series started. People since then have asked me why Greek gods? Why not? Not only are there plenty of gods to choose from, which means lots of potential characters for a book series, but they are fascinating to me. I believe that you should write what you know and love, so ancient gods from mythology just made me want to write them. Plus let’s face it, all those overgrown personalities make for some pretty good fiction! Talk about drama! For my own personal deities of lore stories I chose to place them in modern times with diminished powers. Same egos, but more challenges. So far I am liking the results. Looted, the first in the series was pretty well received and I am hoping Stealing Hearts does just as well. I am loving writing this series and in the latest book have already brought in more gods and that means more stories to tell. Here is a little sneak peak from Stealing Hearts.

Excerpt:
The next morning Bruce awoke feeling happier than he could ever recall feeling. Suddenly he snapped open his eyes to make sure that Sophia still lay beside him. Sure enough, she slept peacefully next to him, a slight smile played on her beautiful features, her long auburn hair mussed, making her even sexier. Thank god, or goddess in this case. He had been afraid she’d disappear despite her promise the night before. Now that his need for her had been abated ever so slightly, maybe he could get her to answer some questions that had been eating him alive since their first meeting. His stomach growled; he forgot when his last meal had been and he had certainly worked up an appetite the previous evening. Quietly, he slipped out of bed, praying that goddesses kept a fully stocked kitchen. Maybe a little breakfast in bed would make her more talkative about the magic she seemed to have awakened within him. He still needed to know what an empath truly was, what he truly was, and what he was capable of doing. It seemed too farfetched to believe he was anything but human. However, he certainly felt different when with Sophia.
Making it to the kitchen, he was thrilled to see Sophia had all the makings for a fine breakfast. He turned on the small television on the counter as he began to get the eggs and bacon ready to cook. Mostly, he just wanted a little noise as he got to work, but something suddenly caught his attention.
“This is the highest profile art heist to hit Los Angeles in history. What is even more puzzling, there is no evidence as to who could have stolen the painting. All cameras and security systems are working properly, and the guards on duty didn’t see or hear anything. No alarms sounded, and the Getty’s systems show that no one entered or exited the premises last night. Van Gogh’s Irises is valued at over fifty-five million dollars, but many consider it priceless. If you have any information please contact the police. This is certainly not how we wanted to start off the New Year…”
Bruce’s heart sank. As he lay asleep last night, exhausted by lovemaking, it appeared Sophia may have been up to her old tricks. How could he ever learn to truly trust a creature such as her? She seemed to be getting bolder too, now she wasn’t just stealing from nefarious rich men, but from the Getty Center, and a high profile piece as well. He must not have provided her with enough excitement last night after all.

New Vampire Release

Please welcome the awesome Sheri Velarde on my blog today. She’s here to tell us more about her latest release of vampire shorts and her inspiration behind the collection.

I think that all authors have weird ticks in their writing, things that they can’t even explain why they exist. For me one of mine is the fact that all of my vampires seem to be French. I have other tick as well, like werebears are Russian and werewolves seem to be American in my writings. But none are more prevalent for me than my French vampires.

Why French vampires? I don’t know if I can full answer that. I suppose part of it is that I lived in France for a while when I was younger and the French culture really stuck with me. Especially their attitudes about sex and sexuality. They are so open and fluid about sex over there. I guess part of me just figures those are the same attitudes that vampires would have. Why be prejudice or prude when you get to live forever? Also, the French accent is just dead sexy. I don’t care what you say, French is one of the sexiest languages out there!

I think I also make my vampire French because I always assume their origins are in Europe, from countries with rich and vast histories. Well France is the country I know the most about, the one I am most comfortable discussing, so it seems to be a natural fit for me. That was extremely important in my historical piece, Curse of the Blood. Plus I want to be different, I don’t want my vampires to be from Eastern Europe. I want a sexy French vampire to dazzle my heroines and heroes.

Hi Everyone,

It’s been a while. Please welcome Sheri Velarde to my blog. She’s here to promote her brand new book…

Book released November 25th

The world of publishing is forever changing and it up to authors to try to keep up. This year has been a great year and a difficult one for me on the publishing front. On the bright side I had my first fantasy novel come out, had a book signing for it, entered new some genres and published several shorts with various publishers. On the downside I saw two of my smaller publishing houses close their doors for good. That saddened me more than I can tell you. That is also what led me to the decision to start self-publishing some of my work. I am still with some small presses and may have something with a large house next year (fingers crossed), but I also want to have some control over my publishing as well. My fiancé and I are forming our own publishing house called Stoker Publishing and Not So Silent Night is our first step towards that dream.
Not So Silent Night is a re-release with expanded scenes and has been completely re-edited. I am pretty proud of this story and think it is the perfect book to launch my self-publishing career on. It’s steamy, sweet and hopeful all at the same time. I am hoping that it is the first of many of my stories that I will be putting out there myself as I move into the new age of publishing, well at least new for me. Scared and excited at the same time. I hope you enjoy a taste of Not So Silent Night.

Just as their passion erupts, the good old boys in town threaten to ruin everything. Getting to know each other is tough for most couples, adding in magic does not make it any easier. Now with a pack of werewolves out to destroy them, things become intense. They find themselves in a fight for their lives. Can their newfound love give them the strength to win against this threat and trust in the future?

Excerpt:
She had almost finished cleaning up in back when she heard the bell on the door ring less than five minutes before closing. “Seriously? Can’t people let me get out of here on time just one damn night?” she muttered to herself as she stormed toward the front so she could wait on her customer and then get the hell out of the store.

Anna whipped around the corner in a huff, not caring if she scared the latecomer away. She stopped in her tracks and almost forgot what had pissed her off when she saw the customer in question. The most breathtaking back view of a man she had ever seen stood just inside the doorway, and her brain stopped working for the moment. Wow, who knew broad shoulders and a great rear could stop a woman in her tracks? While she gawked like an idiot, the man turned around and proved to be even more distracting from the front. This guy was like a wall of muscle, perfect body attached to a very masculine and handsome face with the deepest blue eyes Anna had ever seen.

“Sorry, I know you are about to close, but I need a gift of flowers,” he said when he saw Anna. He had a very thick eastern European accent that she thought might be Russian, which of course only made him hotter. She noticed his eyes taking her in, and she couldn’t help but stand a little straighter, showing her curves off to her advantage while she absentmindedly ran her fingers through her long, wavy, raven hair, which most men seemed to love.

It took Anna’s brain a few moments to catch up before she could speak. Her previous anger and frustration vanished, replaced by eagerness to help this particular customer. “No problem at all. Do you have an idea of what kind of gift you are looking for? Is this for your girlfriend or wife?” Anna held her breath as she waited for this mystery man to answer, a bit annoyed with herself that she cared so much about what he might say.

Pssst…Here’s a sneak peek into the Witness Protection Program

Hi everyone,

The fabulous Carolyn LaRoche is here today to tell us about her brand new release from http://www.breathlesspress.com

So what is the book about?

From Witness Protection:

Someone wants NYPD detective Angelina Ferrara dead…again. Following her heart instead of her mind landed her in Witness Protection. Can she trust it and handsome detective Logan James to keep her alive this time?

As far as the world knows, NYPD detective Angelina Ferrara died in a violent firefight on Chelsea piers over a year ago. Living in the witness protection program as history teacher Lucy Taylor was supposed to save her life but being alive and living were two very different things. Until she meets detective Logan James when he goes undercover in the same private school where she works. Something about the handsome man with the gorgeous blue eyes piques her interest. There’s no doubt he has secrets… but then so does she. When the Ricci crime family discovers she’s still alive, can she trust the same heart that landed her in the witness protection program in the first place to let Logan to help her survive it?

Sounds amazing. Let’s have a look at the excerpt.

Her little car had an engine about as powerful as a hamster wheel. There was no way she was going to outrun the truck that was accelerating with lightning speed. On one side of her was a deep ravine, the other the steep slope of a mountain towered high and tree covered. The steering wheel shook violently as she pushed her little car to its limits, sheer adrenaline keeping her focused on the winding road. As she rounded a sharp curve, the back tires spun and fishtailed out from behind her. The tiny car shook violently as Lucy struggled to maintain control. The SUV caught up with her then, ramming into her rear bumper. The car groaned but held on. Lucy spun the wheel to make the next sharp curve, all the while her eyes searched for a way off the dangerous mountain highway. Another crash from behind jolted her car forward with such force Lucy lost her grip on the steering wheel. The car veered right but she managed to straighten it out before hitting the tree line.

“What the hell do you want with me?” she screamed at the truck in her rearview mirror.

The driver responded by slamming into the back of her car again. Metal ground against metal, gravel flew everywhere, and the car careened toward a thick bank of trees to her left. Straightening the car once more, Lucy crushed the gas pedal to the floor and watched as the speedometer climbed quickly. Lucy felt the little rush of excitement she always got in a good pursuit despite the fact that she was the one being pursued.

She whipped around yet another curve, and the SUV caught up with her. Just as she managed to get her little car under control again, the SUV crashed into her back end again with such force Lucy thought her car might shatter there in the middle of the road. The little car veered to the right, aiming straight for the side of the road and the ravine beyond. Lucy tried to regain control but the effort was in vain. She braced herself as the car plowed through thick vegetation, hit something, and started to slide down the steep embankment.

She heard the growl of the SUV’s engine roaring away over the revving of her own engine as the tiny car crashed through the underbrush. The car flew over a log and landed on the slick vegetation covering the incline. The car lost its hold on the ground and rolled its way down the slope, finally landing up against the trunk of a large pine tree where the engine died. Lucy’s head smacked against the steering wheel knocking her near to senseless. Everything fell deathly silent as she fought to remain conscious.

A loud crack broke the silence. As she watched through the broken windshield, the tree in front of her began to wobble. Blood trailed from her forehead into her left eye blurring her already shaky vision. Rubbing at it with the back of her arm, she used her other hand to desperately claw at the seat belt release.

If she didn’t get out of the car, the tree was going to fall right on top of her.

The giant pine swayed once and then began its descent toward Lucy and her crumpled car. Yanking hard at the jammed seat belt, her head swimming and her stomach churning, Lucy finally freed herself. Just as the tree crushed the roof of her car, like it were nothing more than a tin can, Lucy pulled her body through the opening that used to be the driver’s side window.

Guest Post, Author Shelli Rosewarne

Hi there, and thanks loads for having me over today!

I’m really excited to be able to talk about my new release, Scarlett Legacy, which is a paranormal romance inspired by the fairytale of Little Red Riding Hood. I’ve always loved fairytales, myths and legends and it was so much fun to be able to put my own twist and interpretation on a classic story.

I’m hoping people will enjoy it as much as I did, and look at the Big Bad Wolf in a whole different light J Anyway, let’s see if I can tempt you with a wee excerpt…

Damian’s jaw clenched as he watched her amble through the woods, seemingly lost in her own world and paying no attention to any possible dangers. He lifted his head, breathing in deeply to take in her scent on the drifting breeze. While he’d been expecting a reaction it still hit him like a sucker punch in his gut. His stomach clenched and his body hardened.
His inner beast was already raging at him. The burning need to mark her, to possess her, rising up within like a force of nature but he grit his teeth and forced it down. He was not some undisciplined pup unable to control himself. Years of leading his people had driven into him patience and control above all else.
Instead, he forced himself to stay hidden for now, easily keeping pace with her. She was exactly as he’d always imagined—dark curls flowed down her back and framed delicate features, high cheekbones, and huge dark eyes with thick lashes. Everything about her drew him in, but he’d waited too long to rush things now.
When he’d first sensed her, that indescribable pull that couldn’t be anything else, he’d thought he was going crazy. He’d given up hope long ago, and yet there she was, walking through his woods as though she’d always been meant to be there.
He watched as she paused, looking around her with confusion on her face. She turned in a slow circle, her brow furrowed, and her teeth biting into her lush bottom lip. She was lost, he realized. Well, that was just perfect. His teeth bared in a wicked smile, he could go and “rescue” her. She would think he was Prince Charming when actually he was the big bad wolf.

Okay, so maybe he’s not perfect… but he is pretty yummy and definitely interested in more than dressing up as Granny (well, unless there’s something he’s not telling me!). You can find out more below, and please feel free to follow me on social media. Thanks x

Lost Souls Guest Blog by Sheri Velarde

First let me say a huge thank you to Sheritha for letting me stop by again! Thanks doll, you are the best!
Writing is a pretty tough though rewarding job and sometimes you need someone supportive there in your corner to keep you going when things start to look too tough. For me that someone is my fiancé William. During those time when self-doubt seeps into my thoughts, he is there to tell me that I am a good writer and that I need to keep at it. When a rejection letter comes, and yes they sometimes still do, he tells me to just move on and find a better fit for my story. When life becomes overwhelming and I just feel like giving up writing all together and quitting, he is there to encourage me to make more time and keep at it.
This year was a tough one. I lost my grandmother whom I was a caretaker for, I had major health issues, I was forced to leave my day job for various reasons and that led to financial stress. If there was a year I thought about giving up writing, well it was this year. But William, well he just wouldn’t hear of that. He insisted I keep writing no matter what. He gave me gentle pushes when I needed to get back to writing and encouraged me to keep submitting. I did indeed keep writing and Lost Souls marks my sixth release coming out this year and most of those are all thanks to my fiancé and his constant support. For that all I can say is thank you William and that I hope all authors out there are as lucky as I am to have someone in their corner that believe in them and their talent so much.

Excerpt:
Suddenly she felt a warming sensation shooting through her body, something she had never felt before in her long life. She turned to see what had caused it, or she should say who. A beautiful woman with piercing green eyes and waist-length auburn hair stood in the doorway, casual jeans and black T-shirt hugging her body’s generous curves. She was the most alluring creature Amy had ever seen, and she was staring right at her with a look of intensity in her eyes, as if she had been searching for Amy all along and had finally found her. They stared at each other for what seemed like an eternity before the connection was broken, the pale beauty shaking her head and heading towards an empty seat on the other end of the bar and returning Amy’s senses to her.
With the spell suddenly broken, Amy once again could hear Len finishing up his story as if nothing special had just happened. What the hell was that? Was the woman at the other end of the bar some sort of demon? She had to be magical and otherworldly to cause such a reaction. She certainly had otherworldly looks. Even though her hips and breasts were more ample than most angels and the like, she had the body of a goddess that begged to be touched. Amy shook her head. Len had finished, so she ordered them another round of drinks. As soon as her martini arrived she downed it and immediately signaled for another. If only alcohol affected her like it did most humans she would probably be calming down by now and not worrying about the mystery woman. Instead she still felt strange, like something had come alive inside her for the first time. She risked a glance at the red-headed siren down the way. The subtle temptress was sipping a beer, chatting with a bartender on that side of the bar. Suddenly she laughed and her whole face lit up, causing Amy to at once be jealous of the bartender and to want to be next to this woman and be the one making her laugh.
She must have been staring, for Len interrupted her inner turmoil. “She’s a looker, all right. A woman with curves too, not one of those too-skinny Hollywood types. They’re a rarity out here nowadays. If I were younger I might try to fight you for her.” He laughed. “Of course, if she picks you I would be out of the running anyways; you know, that pesky penis and all.”
It was Amy’s turn to laugh. “You know some women like both men and women.”
Len winked knowingly at her. “So I have been told. But I’ve never taken you to be the sharing sort of gal. Now get over there and let one of us live the fantasy tonight. After all, we are rock stars, go act like one!”

Guest Post – Author Sheri Velarde

First off I want to thank Sheritha for letting me stop by today! She is such a doll to invite me over to explain the inspiration behind my latest release, Looted.

I have loved Greek and Roman mythology since I was a child, same goes for art of almost any kind. And that is the very beginning of my latest release, Looted, which is going to become a series entitled Gods Behaving Badly. This series is my imaging what the gods and goddesses of old are doing in today’s world, a world where no one believes in them anymore. I am hoping that these stories will not only be fun for me to write, but also fun for my readers.

Now Looted is the first in the series and it follows Sophia, once called Aphrodite, in today’s world. The inspiration for this particular story came about from two different sources, one was the fact that I was reading a lot of real life art heist stories at the moment, from Rembrandt thefts to museums in Turkey being looted of their goods. That’s when an art heist theme started to sounds good to me. And let’s face it, if gods and goddesses lived today I would assume they would want to live a certain lifestyle and not do a lot of work for said lifestyle. I was also inspired by Robert de Niro and Al Pacino movie Heat. In it Pacino plays a detective and de Niro a theif. At one point they sit together and have a very amiable conversation and you can see the mutual respect for each other. And that is where the second part of Looted came together. Two people on opposite sides of the law with such a mutual attraction that they can’t ignore it. Sure, Sophia and Detective Stoker take it further than Pacino and de Niro did (sadly they did not even make out in the movie), but the same idea that people on opposite sides of the law can still have a spark between them.

So that’s really it, Looted is a combination of my love of mythology and art, combined with my love of movies and bam… art heist romance with the goddess of love! Makes sense to me! And as a little celebration of this release, I am having a giveaway of one of my previous Secret Cravings Publishing titles, Music and Awakening! One lucky commenter today will win!

Blurb:
Sophia longs for the days when she was worshipped as a goddess and celebrated for her glory. Now she hides in plain sight and does what she must to keep the lifestyle she is accustomed. She has never been close to discovery until one New York City Detective, Bruce Stoker, enters the picture. Now all that she is and has done could come out into the open and destroy everything. She should disappear, but there is something different about this man that draws her to him.

Detective Bruce Stoker has never had an unsolved case, but there is something different about these art heists. Money is taken, but art is given to museums. Strange. If he can find the beautiful woman who seems to be the common link, then everything should be simple. That is what he thought at least until he met the gorgeous suspect in question.

Excerpt

Bruce sat in the lounge. Another night, another expensive bar. He didn’t think his NYPD salary would take much more of this side investigation, but he knew that he was on the right track. Now he just needed to find his mystery beauty, then the real investigation could begin. He had sent out feelers to every host of the finer bars, restaurants and hotels in town, hoping to find a woman to match the description he had. Needless to say there were a lot of gorgeous women in Manhattan and he had spent more time and money than he cared to think about chasing models and actresses.

This was his last tip and his wallet thanked him. If this didn’t pan out, well then back to the drawing board. The fellows back at the station were already making fun of him for searching for a “Model Ring of Thieves,” but they all also knew his hunches always paid off. Could this be the first time he was actually wrong?

Suddenly he felt a hot tingle running down his spine, something more than his “spidey sense” the guys joked about. This was a first. His entire being seemed to be heating up from the inside. It was not unpleasant, but it certainly left him feeling confused. He turned around and saw her walking into the lounge. He had seen the best-looking women Manhattan had to offer over the past few weeks, but none of them could compare to this creature. As he stared, she turned toward him and gave a start, a look of surprise quickly passing over her face before she resumed her beautiful perfection. This was the woman he had been searching for.

Bio:
Sheri Velarde, who sometimes uses the pen name Kelly Ryan, lives in New Mexico and grew up with a fascination for all things that “go bump in the night”, so it is no wonder that she turned to writing paranormal romance. In her spare time, she fancies herself a cryptozoologist and loves to paranormal related outings, searching for things that might not really exist. She is an avid exerciser and gets some of her best ideas while on runs. She also has a bit of a wild side, which only leads to inspiration for her writing.

Being an avid reader since an early age, she has wanted to be a writer for as long as she can remember. She has been writing all her life, but only recently started to actually try to pursue her dream of writing for a living.

She is constantly putting out new material, so it is best to keep up with her on her website.

Cover Reveal – His Cemetery Doll

A fabulous Hello to Everyone,

I have a cover reveal by Breathless Press Author, Brantwijn Serrah.

Before we have a look at the cover, let’s take a look at what the book is about.

His Cemetery Doll

There’s a woman in the graveyard.

Conall Mackay never put stock in ghost stories. Not even after thirteen years serving as the cemetery keeper in the village of Whitetail Knoll. But things change. Now, his daughter is dreaming of a figure among the tombstones. The grounds are overrun by dark thorns almost faster than Con can clear them. White fog and gray ribbons creep up on him in the night, and a voiceless beauty beckons him from the darkest corners of the graves.

When the world he knows starts to unravel, Conall might finally be forced to believe.

Excerpt:

He hadn’t slept long before he heard sounds from down in the kitchen below.
“Shyla!” he called gruffly. “Weren’t you heading into town?”
No answer came from below, but the sounds of pots clanging told him his daughter toyed about down there. Perhaps she’d decided not to leave him after all and taken it into her head to now re-organize the house, since he’d so clearly wanted her to stay out of the cemetery. With a low groan, Conall rolled out of bed and stepped out into the hall.
“Shyla!” he called again, coming to the head of the stairs. If she had stayed home, she could at least do it without making a lot of noise.
“Shyla, I—”
He staggered then, as the hallway dimmed. Afternoon light flickered strangely, lightning cracking a dismal sky outside, and in the space of time afterward everything else darkened. Conall darted a glance around him as the house fell into shadow.
From the top of the stairwell, he saw the first whispering tendrils of white fog.
The heat of adrenaline shot through his limbs. Conall stumbled back into his bedroom, even as the fog pursued. His gaze shot to the window as the last gray light of day faded away and eerie darkness replaced it, like an eclipse sliding over the sun.
More cold mists veiled the glass, dancing and floating. Trembling overtook him as he spun to find another escape.
He froze, finding himself face-to-face with the broken mask of the cemetery doll.
“You—” he gasped. His breath came out white as the fog enveloped them both, leaving a space of mere inches between them, so he could still see her expressionless face. Gray ribbons wound and curled through the air around him.
“Who are you?” he asked.
The doll stared up at him. He sensed her searching, looking into his eyes even though hers remained covered. She held him there with her unseen gaze, until her cool, cold hand came up to touch his bare chest.
Conall let out a low breath. He closed his eyes, and a shudder of strange ease rippled through his body. The cool pads of her fingers ran down his sternum, to his navel. The silky ribbons brushed along his side.
Then he noticed her other hand. She lifted it up, to her own chest, and she held something tightly in her fingers: Shyla’s stuffed dog.
“I made that…for my daughter,” he whispered. The woman with the broken mask tilted her head down toward the small toy, studying it. For a fraction of a second, her fingers appeared to tighten around it. She returned her gaze to him, then, and the toy fell from her grip into the fog, forgotten.
“Wait—” he said, but she brought her other hand up to his chest to join the first, and he recognized eagerness in the way she pressed her icy skin against his. Her face tilted to him, and then came her lips again, ivory and flawless.
“I—” Conall breathed. “I…don’t understand…”
Her fingers slid up, around his neck, but he pulled away.
“No, this…this can’t real. I’m asleep. I must be.”
Gray ribbons danced, pulling him back to her, and she stroked his face. He sucked in a breath at her touch and found his own hand coming up to brush hers.
“You’re so cold,” he said. “Like stone…but…”
Her cool touch thrilled him; it made his skin tingle and the heat of his own body sing. Her perfect flesh did, in fact, prove soft under his hands, as if the contact with his worn calluses infused cold ivory with yearning. She caressed his cheek, and Conall leaned into it. Before he could stop himself, he bowed his head to her and kissed her frozen lips.
